ABOUT US

About Us

Cartoons for Democracy is a woman-founded, volunteer-run non-profit whose idea germinated during the “great reckoning” period after the 2024 election. Taking to heart advice of seasoned activist leaders who in November and December of 2024 advised disheartened and burned-out activists on ways to stay engaged, and fight back better than before. After November many people advised disheartened activists to step back and evaluate their efforts, and possibly make changes to their habits to avoid burn-out all together.

SOME OF THE ADVICE OFFERED WAS:

Don't spread yourself too thin - pick one thing and focus on that. We are taking our 8+ years of experience managing volunteer postcarding operations and focusing on that as our medium, and on billionaires outsized roles in tainting our elections as our issue.

Think outside the box - what hasn't been done before, and what can be done better? We believe the way we run our postcard operations improves the processes for better outcomes, by providing complete kits of postcards and addresses, partially pre-printing cards, and supplying specific artwork targeted to the audience at hand. We also are targeting people who are not democrats, which is not usually done in postcard operations.

Humor is a powerful tool of resistance - we are leaning into evidence that shows humor is a successful means of penetrating apathy bubbles and undermining authoritarianism. Political Cartoons in particular have proven their success for centuries, especially targeting low information, low attention-span readers.

Playing into our strengths - the founding team is made up of seasoned professionals in the business and design world, retired federal employees (thanks DOGE!), attorneys, development officers, and artists, who have been volunteering for liberal causes since 2016. The founder/CEO and board of directors are women, as are most of the volunteers.

If any of our story appeals to you, please consider sending postcards  or donating to support our cause.
